A MOSQUE trustee whose relatives killed in Pakistan earthquake has set up an appeal for relief funds. Mohammed Ashraf Khan, a trustee and chairman of Abubakar Mosque in Southall Broadway, said his family comes from the Bagh region of Pakistan, an area badly affected. He lost family including a cousin and uncle: "I have family over there who all died and all their houses were destroyed. There was nothing left – especially in Muzzaffarabad and Bagh." The two areas are among those worst hit by the weekend’s disaster. Mr Khan is travelling to Pakistan on Sunday to give out food and medicine bought with donations from Abubakr mosque members. He said: "people need shelter, medical supplies and food. Houses will be built later but at the moment that’s what they need. I’m spending everything to help the people over there." Southall Broadway businessman Dalawar Chaudhry who has family in Pakistan is also organizing emergency aid. Mr Chaudhry, co-owner of Chaudhry’s TKC restaurant was on the telephone to his brother Khawar in Lahore, which luckily only experienced tremors, when the quake was happening. He said: "I was speaking to my brother Khawar in Pakistan and I could hear shudders and people saying ‘vacate the building’. "he was shouting to his children ‘get out, get out’." Khawar Chaudhry decided to stay in Pakistan to help and is now working as a volunteer for the charity himmat. The Chaudhry's have already raised £1500 in Southall through donations from the public and have organized a truck full of aid which went to Muzzaffarabad on the very day the tragedy happened. The brothers will break fast at the end of Ramadan tomorrow (Saturday) at 6pm as usual, but this year it will take the form of a charity meal to help victims. More than 300 people have booked and extra places have had to be laid on at a cost of £ 6.99 a head. Asif Khawaja, president of jamia masjid Mosque on Townsend Road, says this is a massive tragedy for congregation. The 60-year-old said: "Everybody’s concerned, they’ve got a relatives out there or they know someone who has." Money from the mosque’s Friday collection is going to victims. The sikh temple in Havelock Road and Park Avenue have also said they are praying for the victims and are meeting to discuss fundraising shortly.
